Life on the swings

What is the first memory that you have and how old were you? I have a friend of mine from Illinois who swears up and down that he remembers being inside his mothers womb. I know, sounds a bit crazy and for the record, I don’t believe him either. My first memory was from when I was about 4 years old. My parents moved around quite a bit when I was growing up. At this particular stage of life, my parents and I along with my at that time 1 younger brother (aaron) lived in a small Illinois town called Lindenwood. At that time, my best friends name was Michael. He lived across the street from me and from what my parents tell me, we hung out all the time. Michael had an older sister named Emily (who at this time would have been about 7) who sometimes would play with us. On this particular summer afternoon, we were swinging on the swingset behind my house. Well, more like Emily was swinging and we were watching her. She was after all the oldest which meant that she was the boss. Mike and I were getting kind of bored and decided to go inside. I must have forgotten that emily was in the swing and sure enough I walked right in front of her while she was swinging and WHAM, I got knocked onto my four year old rear end. I remember getting the wind knocked out of me and being afraid of going on the swings for the next season of my life.

This specific memory crossed my mind last week while on a walk with Addison. Julie, Addison and I have a little bit of a tradition. Each day when I get home from work, we take a walk down to the park a little ways away from our house in Fort Myers. Once we get to the park, we take Addison out of her stroller and put her in the baby swings at the park. I can honestly tell you, watching her laugh on the swings is one of my most favorite thing in the world. You know what is so crazy? At this stage of her life, Addison has no idea that swings could potentially be dangerous. The only thing that she knows is that she has a blast while on the swings. Do you know that we have only 2 fears that we are born with….heights and loud noises. The rest of the fears that we develop over the course of our lifetimes are learned. The Bible is filled with instances with God telling His people to “Fear not.”

What are your fears at this stage of your life? I challenge you today to give them to Jesus and allow Him to help make you into the man or woman of God that He is intended for you to be all along. Get back on the swings and enjoy this precious gift that we have been given called life.

With Expectancy!
