Lost Luggage
Posted: Jul 6, 2009 in Uncategorized | No Comments |

I have had the privilege to fly quite a bit over the past several years. I have visited several countries and nearly all of our 50 states. Up until recently, one thing that I could claim after all of my travels was that I had never had a piece of lost luggage. That is until this past week. The strangest part about the lost luggage is that I carried it on the plain. How in the world can you lose a piece of carry on luggage you may ask? Allow me to explain.

Last week, our family flew up to Kentucky to spend a few days with my wife’s family for the 4th of July. Julie’s dad always purchases the good fireworks and he puts on a show in the front yard for the entire street. It is pretty cool (especially for a guy like me who likes fire:)) Our flight left from St. Petersburgh, FL and we flew straight into Lexington. The Lexington airport is about the size of a queen sized mattress. When we boarded the plain in St. Pete, I realized that my carry on luggage would not fit into the overhead bins….awesome. Having long legs as I do, sticking the bag under the seat was not an option. I then proceeded to take my bag to the flight attendant who assured me that they would place my bag with the checked luggage and that I would be able to pick it up at baggage claim upon arrival in Lexington. We land in Lexington, head down to baggage claim and wait. The bags start to come out, my bag is nowhere in sight. After the belt stops and my bag is not there (which is never good) I go to the baggage claim office and there is noone there. Apparently, this particular airline is short staffed and so all employees are out handling the bags. 45 minutes later, I was informed that my bag was lost. After several minutes of confusion, come to find out somebody took my bag out of the storage area, handed it to a worker who then put it back on the plain which was headed back to St. Pete. Are you kidding me? I drove to my inlaws that night thinking I must be the only person in America who has lost a piece of carry on luggage. 2 days later, my bag came (although there were items missing which we will talk about at a later time:))

I guess I will give the airlines credit in the fact that of well over 50 flights, this was the first time I have ever lost a bag. I survived the first few days (with the help of a late night run to Wal Mart.) After being initially pretty frustrated over the whole ordeal, God was able to use this as a teaching moment for me. It is during times of stress and frustration that the real you comes out. Not when things are going well, but when things are not. I am so thankful for God’s grace and for 2nd chances. Sometimes it takes something pretty meaningless (like losing your luggage) to help things make sense in our lives. If you are going through a stressful time in your life, take my advice….slow down, take a deep breath, and allow God to teach you something through the frustration. And if you need to, take a late night trip to Wal Mart.

With Expectancy!
